The new building will greatly increase the inpatient capacity of the existing cardiac hospital located just across the street. Pediatric as well as VIP patient wings create an L around a central exterior Playscape. This undulating form is a mix of triangulated play surfaces; recycled rubber, deck planks, and grass. Shaded during the afternoon hours by the north and west towers, recovering and visiting children are welcome to explore and play. Inspired by the regional landscape, the Playscape reaches from the sand dunes, to the mountains and finally the sky illustrated on the public walls of the pediatric halls. From the front corner, exterior balconies allow curious kids to peak down at arriving cars below.
